Vung Vieng is situated in the centre of Bai Tu Long Bay, about 24 km from the mainland. Out of the four fishing villages in Halong Bay, Vung Vieng is the least touristy, a perfect fit for travellers seeking to experience the traditional culture and customs of local fishermen who have adapted their way of life on water for generations. After disembarking your mother boat, you will be transferred by rowing boats or kayaks to enter the village.

Visiting Vung Vieng will give you a glimpse into the life of the people in the area. There are about 30 families living in clusters of houses anchored within the natural protection of surrounding mountains. The population is somewhere between 150 and 200 residents with nearly 100 fishermen. The village’s traditional earnings, which come solely from fishing, are exchanged for food they cannot cultivate and for fresh water which can only be imported from mainland. Visitors to Bai Tu Long now bring them extra income through rowing boat services.

In 2014, Quảng Ninh Province’s People’s Committee made a decision to relocate most of the residents to the mainland. Families found new homes in Hà Phong Ward, while a small group was permitted to engage in aquaculture activities in the old floating houses. However, the loating village of Vung Vieng has still keeped its beauty of life and nature

Unlike living in mainland, most activities of the locals here are closely associated with the waters and spectacular limestone islands. It is the difference on natural conditions and living habits that creates distinct cultural characteristics in Vung Vieng, making the village a unique beauty nowhere to be found. Tourists will surely be mesmerised by the beauty of the boats here, the particular fishing nets in front of the locals’ home, the hospitable fishermen and smiling children on their boat to school.
